Good morning from the Paralympics in Whistler. Today is my first full day as co-mayor of the Athletes Village, a volunteer role that I was happy to accept from VANOC, all the more so because my good friend Marni Abbott-Peter accepted as well. Our duties, if you can call them that, are pretty simple; over the next four days we will take part in welcoming ceremonies for all the countries, giving a short speech and exchanging gifts with the Chefs de Mission. Beyond that, we are free to mix and mingle with the athletes, volunteers, and work force milling about the village. Pretty good gig.
So I thought I’d drop by here periodically over the next few weeks and share the experience as well as I can. Marni is handling all the ceremonies today, while I head into Whistler village to “run” with the Paralympic torch. (The Athletes village is actually a couple km south of Whistler).
Below are a few photos that show what I’ve been up to in the lead up to the Games ie. speaking at schools and community centres around Vancouver about the Paralympics, and whenever possible, hopping in my chair, grabbing a basketball, and showing what Paralympic sport looks and feels like up close.
